Biography

D.A. Bullock is an award-winning filmmaker and social practice artist in the field of story-based community organizing. His films have been featured at national and international festivals including Toronto International Film Festival & Chicago International Film Festival. Winner of best feature film 2003 Urbanworld Film Festival in New York.

In 2011 Bullock founded Bully Creative Shop, a feature film, documentary, media art and digital content social enterprise. Bullock is a 2014 McKnight IFP Media Artist Fellow, 2015 MN State Arts Board Grant recipient and 2016 Intermedia Arts / City of Minneapolis Creative Citymaking Artist and a 2017 Bush Fellow. He is a North Minneapolis resident and member of JXTA Arts 1108 W. Broadway Co Op studios.

His cinematography work can be seen currently in the ARRAY Releasing documentary film VANISHING PEARLS, which told the story of Louisiana Black oyster fishermen and their struggle and trauma after the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill in 2010.

Bullock’s 2016 project for the City of Minneapolis, Blueprint for Equitable Engagement project have been meeting with a range of community members and City officials to hear about their definition of the term “equity.” Bullock developed a series of short video segments to pilot using video as a public comment format (similar to letters and emails), by incorporating the depth of a storytelling platform.

Bullock also developed a mobile, artist designed engagement pulpit in collaboration with JXTA, a youth arts organization in North Minneapolis. The pulpit has made an appearance at several community events across Minneapolis to give the community a creative platform for speaking their minds. The concept is for all residents of Minneapolis to have a voice and a platform to share and shape what equity and the future of Minneapolis will look like.

Bullock is co-founder of the Underground Media Collective and co-host of The Underground a podcast radio show broadcast locally on WFNU-LP low power community radio station of Frogtown Neighborhood. The podcast/radio show is yet another history, culture and story sharing platform that centers the community.

Qualifications

D.A. Bullock brings over two decades of experience as a director, cinematographer, and media artist with a focus on storytelling for social impact. He has deep expertise in narrative and documentary filmmaking, media strategy for civic engagement, and community-based arts practice.

He is skilled in directing, producing, and editing feature-length and short-form films, with works featured in international film festivals. His technical proficiencies include cinematography, audio-visual production, and content development across digital platforms.

Bullock is also experienced in public engagement, having developed creative tools like video-based public commentary formats and mobile storytelling installations. His leadership in collaborative arts initiatives includes youth mentorship, artist-led civic engagement, and founding media collectives that center community voice.

As a podcast host, radio producer, and arts educator, Bullock is recognized for building platforms that uplift community histories and facilitate dialogue around equity, identity, and change.
